How many hummingbirds have I seen? They are at the top of the list each spring for migrants that we just cannot wait to see, and for the longest time I had not learned anything new about them. But take a look next time that you see one in the summer, and if you see one with a 5 o’clock shadow like the one above, you have a juvenile male in your presence. Those specks on the white throat are the beginnings of the red throat the males end up getting, and what lends the ruby-throated hummingbird its name.

  1. Love hummingbirds! Unfortunately, I didn’t put out my feeder this year. I was afraid Kira’s dog would chase them on our deck.
